Goodwill Industries of Central Texas (GICT) is a non-profit organization that provides job training, employment placement services, and other community-based programs for people who have a disability or a criminal record, lack education or job experience, or are homeless. They serve the young, the old, veterans, the poor, and new immigrants. At the end of 2012, Goodwill was a $65 million organization with 1,500 employees, the 30th largest business in the region. It served 70,000 of your neighbors and had an impact exceeding $150 million.
In this talk, Davis and Haines will discuss the impact of incorporating new technologies and systems in a large, non-profit service organization. To continue to grow its mission and operation at about 10% per year, the leadership team had to prepare Goodwill’s culture?it’s people?to use systematic processes and decision-making through the use of technology in its daily operations and strategic planning. Learn about the challenges and successes along the way.
Gerald (“Jerry”) L. Davis
Jerry has been president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Central Texas since 1998. Davis began his career with Goodwill in 1993 as the president in Sandusky, Ohio. He has chaired and served on many committees, including Goodwill Global Inc., and is a current board member of Workability International-Americas Group and University Federal Credit Union. Davis received the Ernst & Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2010 and the Matthews Entrepreneurial Award in 2011. In addition, Davis received the PJ Trevethan Award in 2012, and most recently received the Kenneth K. King Award, the most prestigious award a CEO can receive, from Goodwill Industries International.
Davis holds a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy (Ohio State University) and a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Services Administration (DePaul University).
Zachary (Zac) Haines
Zac joined Goodwill Industries of Central Texas in August 2007. During his tenure with the organization, he has worked to create a culture devoted to continuous improvement. In 2008, Haines founded the Performance Excellence department, which is devoted to continuous improvement and quality projects, strategic planning, Lean/Kaizen, and data analysis. He has also spearheaded adoption of the Baldrige criteria as a model for organizational improvement and has helped the organization achieve the Quality Texas Progress Level Award.
Prior to joining GICT, Haines worked as a programmer and global project manager at Dell. In these roles, he helped bridge the communication gap between technical professionals and business teams to drive mission critical information technology projects to successful fruition.
He is currently working towards a Masters in Science of Organizational Improvement from Bellevue University and expects to graduate in 2013. His Bachelor’s degree in International Relations was awarded by Bucknell University.
